Paramedic: the History of the Ambulance

Paramedic students are trained in how to handle and operate an ambulance during their paramedic training programs.

The whole idea behind an ambulance crew, carrying out medical treatment during transportation is still relatively new. Medical treatments have however evolved throughout the ages.

The ambulance primarily serves as a vehicle to transport people to or from a location. This was for instance a problem during wars hence why the ambulance was created. The word “ambulance” was originally used on the battlefield. To help transport wounded.

There was made major steps forward in ambulances during the 1830s. It was here that the horse-drawn transport of cholera patients in London was first introduced.

In the late 19th century, the automobile was developed and was seen in the streets alongside horse-drawn carriages. The first car-ambulance was made in 1899 to The Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago from donations from 500 local business owners. New York followed a year later, but with higher speed car, better brake performance, greater patient safety and in general a smoother driving experience.

From the mid- 20th century, car companies started to develop the first ambulances that we know today. It was up through the 1960s and 1970s that they started to experiment and later recommend, the use of artificial respiration and heart massage during ambulance transportations. The medical treatments found in today’s ambulances are a lot more advanced and safe compared to back then.
